BLUE BANDED BEE (Amegilla cingulata)
Blue banded bees are an Australian species of bee that live solitary lives, and do not form hives. The females dig burrows to nest in after mating when they need to lay eggs, and the males seek out shelter among twigs and sticks when they need to.
Blue banded bees are sexually dimorphic, with males identified from the 5 bands on their abdomen, and females identified from their 4 bands.
The most common bee seen in Australian suburban yards would be the domestic European honeybee. Blue-banded bees are smaller than their European cousins and arguably make a louder ‘buzz’ noise given their pollination technique. Blue-banded bees are found in every state and territory of Australia except for Tasmania. They are not listed as endangered, however they are noted to be declining in population due to a combination of issues including the use of toxic pesticides. They are more at risk to this threat due to their burrowing nature in soil compared to other species like feral European honeybees that live in hives.
