"Greater Bilby," Limited Edition print
"Greater Bilby," Limited Edition print
Greater bilbies are roughly the size of a rabbit with large ears, and a long nose filled with sharp teeth. Their bodies can measure up to 55cm with an extra 29cm for tail. Males are larger, weighing in at up to 2.5kg with females usually around 1kg. They are a nocturnal, omnivorous and burrowing marsupial living in arid environments. This means that they are mostly active at night, eat a ranged diet such as bugs and insects as well as seeds, bulbs, fruit and fungi. They dig large burrows, similar to rabbits, however unlike rabbits they are marsupial mammals which means they have a pouch like a kangaroo, and no external nipples. These adaptations help them live in their desert environments. Sadly the greater bilby is usually just referred to as a ‘bilby,’ as the lesser bilby became extinct in the 1950s.
